dream job passed by

I don't believe it. Four months ago I was a struggling freelance journalist looking for permanent employment. My dream job? A features writer for SL magazine. SL is a kick-ass funky, controversial mag aimed at young working professionals and students. Most people that work there end up at FHM, its older-brother magazine. I sent SL my CV hoping that they may have a position for me there. In the meantime, sick of waiting, I took my current job, as a copywriter in an advertising department. I love my job, I love the people I work with and I'm learning new things. About five minutes ago I get a phonecall from the editor of SL, whom I know, because I freelance for them sometimes.
Editor: I'd like to offer you a job as our features editor.

I nearly started crying. I can't leave my current job, as I've just started, and I don't want to look like a job-hopper. I had to turn it down. And now I'm just fucking depressed and annoyed that they hadn't got a hold of me sooner. Fuuuuuuuuuck! To add to this, the work I'm doing in advertising right now is tedious and boring. To think I could be writing about sex, drugs and rock 'n roll on a daily basis. Fuck fuckety fuck fuck fuck.

oh shit. that sucks :( it must be fate playing a hand though - maybe you're destined to be editor in chief instead!

I sure hope you're right. Frazzled. Not sure if I've done the right thing. Maybe I should tell my boss, to show how "loyal" I am to this company. (Compensation would be nice as a thanks???? How about it?)

If I were you I would ask for a quiet chat with your boss, explain the situation, but don't say you've turned it down yet. Then say xx months ago it would have been your dream job, but you're enjoying work so much now that you don't want to leave. But they did offer you a very attractive salary package......
then see if (s)he takes the bait! I once wangled an £8k salary rise by doing this ;)

great stuff - well done you! I will do just that, perhaps after her kitchen tea, so she's even more super impressed. Opportunity definately knocks!

You should not have turned that job down. Go with your feelings. As they say about advertising " My mother used to think I was the piano player in a whorehouse, until I told her I worked in advertising."

Yikes! I spent ast night tossing and turning with this one. But I've weighed up the options: I'm sticking to the smarmy world of advertising for now. Things have progressed - I may be able to become a contractual columnist for this magazine afterall. Please hold thumbs! I don't plan to be here forever, but I guess for now it works. I agree though, the reputation of advertising certainly precedes itself. Let's just say I've learnt how to lie alot....

I always have problems commenting on your blog since you don't allow anonymous comments (it won't recognize my username and password) so this isn't timely anymore.

My advice is this, you would only be considered a job jumper if you were to quit your new accepted job soon after accepting it. They offered you the job so they don't care about your past anymore and although your current employer might be a little miffed, that won't hurt you unless you were to quit the new job soon after accepting it. I would have accepted the new job but it sounds like things will work out alright in the end. Good luck.

Thanks Ed. Hope you right. I also know, or hope, that other opportunities further up the road will happen for me. This just seems like the wrong time somehow.

Oh and about your pampaer pack for your boss (refer to higher blog): I'm thinking, because you're an engineer, right? Engineers love gadgets. (Ex was an engineer, so this is how I know). So if you ever had to choose something, buy him electrfied tools/motorised toy car or a pen that spits paint capsules out of it. Or just hope he never needs pampering.:)
