colic

No one knows what really causes 'colic' in a baby. All that is clear is that it is loosely defined as 'continuous crying for no apparent reason for at least 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for 3 months.'

Three hours a day? That would be nice. We are clocking all nighters of wailing, pocked by more wailing in the day.

THREE MONTHS? This happens for 3 months?! I don't think we will last that long. We will die before then.

We are trying everything. Routine feeding. Demand feeding. Winding. Rocking. Sleeping on my chest. Giving Infacol drops and gripe water.

It makes no difference.

Holy crap what are we going to do?

One last resort - go to paediatrician and pray they can do something.

Did you ever hear of purple crying? Basically the concept is that babies cry for no known reason as part of normal development? I don't know if that makes parents feel any better...

We found with Connor that his went away when he was moved to formula and nothing else - paediatrician reckoned he was allergic to something that was coming through from mom - might want to check what you're eating :-)

Three months? Nah! More likely six weeks and you are right there is nothing worse than not being able to console the poor kid! I know this will not make things feel better, but believe me when I say that this is but a blip on the radar! Hang in there and you will not believe how fast time flies! Look back in a couple of months and wow. The real fun will start soon, I promise. :)

Do you think he might have reflux? especially common in preemies. Its caused by excess acid production in the stomach and the paed can order a milk scan to diagnose and get him on an acid reducing med like Losec (or just get the meds without diagnostics good ol SA Style) it takes about 2 weeks to kick in but will transform your child and change your life.

I sympathise. I took all 3 of mine to the chiropracter. Try and find one that specialises in colic. It helped quite a bit though it did not take it away completely. I also found Bennetts colic mixture helped a lot. Good luck!
