the rapture

I was having an interesting conversation with a very Christian reborn-type colleague yesterday.
She reckons that there’s this thing that’s going to happen called The Rapture, where all reborn Christians will suddenly disappear from the face of the Earth. Without a trace. And all of us sinner types will be left in chaos on the Earth.

She totally believes this, even if no scientific evidence suggests otherwise.

Maybe she’s been brainwashed.

That's scary. I have a few of those kind of people in my office. Usually, the old 'smile and nod' method works.

Oh, your Viagra is here by the way. Do you want to sign for ir? Shall I just leave it on your doorstep?

Absolutely. I smiled and nodded until I vblurted out, "Seriously, you really think you're just going to disappear? What makes YOU better than me? I'm sure I saw you stealing the office coffee cannister earlier today..."

Thanks, yes, I'll take five cartons of that Viagra stuff. Bill me. :)

Good riddance - the world would be a much more fun place without 'em I say ;)

Totally. There is nothing that escapes the realms of my understanding than those who hang out in the Bible Belt.

Touche.

The last thing you want to hear when life has just kicked you in the groin.

"God has a plan for you"

Someone actually said that to me when i broke up with my girlfriend of 4 years.

My reply?

"Motherfucker obviously wants me to be miserable"

For sure.

Because if He really was that forgiving and nice, then we would'nt have to deal with break ups/bad sex/traffic and brussel sprouts.

This God-loves-me colleague also said that all I needed to do to "get saved" was to say one prayer. "It's that easy."

Sure. I believe you.

Sounds like a real Ned Flanders. Religion causes more problems than it solves, but that's a given everyone knows that.
Why live your life in fear of a fictional authoritarian figure?

Ho-hum. I'll never understand it and I don't think I want to. I'll stay on the side of the sane.

Peas on Toast said...

Absolutely. I'm sure you become a little insane when you belive in something as intangible as "being saved."

It's scary how convinced she is. That's what scares me.

:)

Smile and nod. Just smile and nod.

No scientific evidence suggests that someone can disappear from the face of the earth. No scientific evidence suggests that someone can't either. My thought on this matter is that those who believe have nothing to lose. If they are right, they get what they wanted. If they are wrong, they are no better than you. Where you on the other hand are in a lose-lose situation and if you are proven wrong.....well.....lets just say it will be too late to fix. I would rather have a 50% chance than no chance at all.

Sure. Thta's why I said the prayer. And why I'm trying to be a better person. However, you have to admit, that it is farfetched.

OK, so it is farfetched, if you want to speak scientifically. But then a lot of things in this life are. I have had evolution drilled into my head more times than I can count. But I still do not beleive in it. Why? Because science isn't everything. Science can't explain some of the things that I have seen in life. I choose to believe in God, despite the seeming lack of "Scientific evidence" (although speaking as someone who does know science, I think there actually is a lot.) I guess my point is that I believe I am right in taking God on faith, and that one day I will be very glad that that is so. Smile and nod at me if you must, but I do believe in the Rapture. And also in the power of prayer. Some perspective from the other side of things.

I hope to sneak into the rapture... hiding under the coat of someone worthy.

Ok, so we all have different opinions. It's cool, it's cool. And yes, if we get to be in the Rapture, that's awesome. If not, well God doesn't love us then.

On behalf of all of us, I will ask the Magic 8 Ball if we will all go to heaven:
"Looks good to me!"
YIPPEEEEEE! See? It's ALL good.
