hmmm..copywrite or copycat?

So I'm grumpy, sweating, aching and mock charging in my hungover state already. So imagine my surprise at finding www.grantavenue.co.za. Please note, I am grumpy and all I want to do is go home.

They have copied and pasted my blog word-for-word onto their website. This is a website about Johannesburg, with particular reference to Grant Avenue in Norwood. My question is - why put my whole site up there? With pictures of myself in a trolley, for instance. I mean, don't get me wrong, I am flattered that my getting hammered and so forth is newsworthy - trust me - but I am slightly perplexed.

I won't scream 'plagiarism', mainly because I can't really, you do have a button in which to click onto to get to my site, but that's it. If the person who runs the site please could make real reference to my blog as in "Mushy Peas On Toast", that would be appreciated. A link or something. This is my work afterall, not yours.

I would email or phone you myself of course, but you have conveniently not left any contact details on you site.

So if you could link me, or make particular reference to my site, my writing, I won't throw a frothy. Ta. Glad you like my shit though.

Peas, I reckon they just want to pass your smashing writing off as their own. They're probably so ashamed that they have no tallent and have had to resort to copy and pasting.

well peas, that is quite something. It's just been taken like that, straight outta your blog, no mention whatsoever of the five journo criteria. You're nice enough not to do a Bristow-Bovey /last night's CSI episode on these people, but that certainly is worrying. I mean, without the expected context/explanation of the source, what the hell is that supposed to mean anyway?
Makes you wonder about the rest of the site's attribution.

lau, you should be ashamed of the fact that you don't know talent has one 'l''.

Anonymous said...

Cheese & Rice, Shum! I don't really care how many 'l's there are, it's Friday and i'm not in the mood to re-read everything i type.

Thanks Lau and Anon.

I'm a little pissed off. And I'm not sure I'm overreacting because I am hung like Mother Russia, or because I should be. Dodgy he has no contact details on his site either....

that's rediculous!

Peas, i don't blame you for being a bit pissed off plus having a size hangover too. I say..."rather you than me". But i suppose there's not much you can do about the problem, so take some pain killers and go have a nap in your car.

O-D - tell me about it

Lau - christ if only. two and a half more hours of hell, so help me God...

I was going to say 'What, don't they know how to spell plagiarism'

But then I had to stop cause I had to type the word 'plagiarism','plaigarism','plagiersim' a good few fucking times till it looked right.
Too late on a Friday.
After a while none of them looked right so I had to resort to spellchecker.

Someone please order me a whiskey or a whisky or a wiskey...

Can I pleeeeaze have a fucking Scotch$%&@^*^#!

j-and-it - brilliant, thanks so much. IN my hungover state I can't do anything productive today...

D - yeah. gotta love the Internet...it's easy than photocopying.

Rev - please have all my scotch china. I'll give you all the alcohol in my house at the moment! :)

Yeah, as other-j-in-it said, registration details for the domain are here.

Now, armed with this info, I guess you can stakeout the Norwood Postnet branch, sendy nasty smses, and just generally be rude to the offender.

I reckon that this grantavenue site is a "splog" - a spam blog created specifically to steal other's content and use it to serve up google ads to try and make money.

Peas on Toast said...

Done it - sent him an email. I await his response.

shaun - I reckon so as well - the splog thing. I've been through it this afternoon, and after much deliberation, sent him this email: (If anyone cares:)

Hi Tony

I came across your site Grant Avenue.co.za today with quite a few
cuttings and pastings from my blog www.mushypeasontoast.blogspot.com.

Two questions: Just for interest, why is it relevant to your site? I'd
be interested to know. Most of what is pasted therein has nothing to do with Norwood directories or listings - especially photos of myself and conversations I have with my flatmates. (I am very flattered nonetheless.)

And secondly, please could you link my site to yours or make clear
reference to my site at each posting. I realise you have 'go' button that
directs people to my site, but I'd like more reference than that - as in
my actual blog name at the beginning or end of these excerpts.

They are my personals writings and rantings afterall, so I do feel this is
fair. I'm sure you can understand why.

Let me know if you have any problems with doing this.

Kind regards,
Peas On Toast

WOW Pea's that is rather shocking!! shite..I would also be more than a bit miffed.
gosh im just reading that site now and holy fek! I cannot wait to see his response...
*insert shocked emoticon here*
Hope you sort it out!!

Kel said...

Also what the fuck is that site about?
It makes no freaking sense???
Twit.

Bwahahaha. who is this guy? could you get a more off topic website? he's got news, stabbings and blog cutouts all in one page.

Peas on Toast said...

Kel - yeah it's odd hey. At first glance, it's a directory of all the places to go in Norwood, with a bit of news in SA thrown in here and there - juxtaposed, for instance with a conversation I had with 3RM about us getting goofed.

WTF? :) It's actually funny when I look at it. And then the pic of Team Poen. Wahaha. (It's not like I live in Norwwod either :)

Anyway, I can't wait to hear his response. I think I was more than nice hey? If he responds at all.

Peas on Toast said...

Sunchaser - yeah I reckon as Shaun says, it's a splog.

Anonymous said...

it looks like he did it to throw something positive in there. the rest of the news reads kinda like crimeexpo. oh yeah and it looks like there was actual SNOW in sandton. unfknblvbl....

ATW said...

Seems like the splog menace has finally hit za. You could go to town on it like this raving lunatic but it's probably not worth the effort. Your efforts at doing this might make interesting reading though.

Maybe he responds positively to your nice request and all is groovy? Not likely.

ATW said...

Actually this is a better link..

I quote from some of it on why splogs should be stopped... "It is about the lost opportunity to engage in dialogue. You cannot comment from a news reader, aggregator, social links page, you have to come here. This is where engagement and dialogue takes place. That is at the end of the day, what it is all about.
The internet is the one place where it is easier to ask permission that ask forgiveness.
But if you take it, I am going to hurt you.

Hi peas on toast,

Thanks for the email regarding your copyrite of your blog. I'm the owner of grantavenue.co.za and sincerly don't mean to upset anyone.

I've removed peas on toast RSS feed from my aggregator. I hope the exhibition of your work on grantavenue helped bring you more readers.

Oh, and thanks for the headsup on no email address. There are a number of places where my phone number is listed, but I can see that requires some clarification.

I'm gonna post this and a bit from some research I've done on my blog mediacozw.blogspot.com, so that my apology and your comments stay live. I want to work out the difference between say what I'm doing and Technorati, IceRocket and Bloglines.

best regards from norwood.
