facebook, stalkers & the cia

OK, so here are my thoughts on Facebook.

It's an evil machine.
An evil database, if we're going to be specific.

Two reasons.

1)Stalker abilities. Ex boyfriends, nemeses and the like, can see who I hang out with, and possibly what I did on Saturday evening. And vice versa. Quite frankly, I don't want to know what some of these people ate for breakfast. Even if they're not your 'facebook friend', they can check out who you're friends with.

Before Facebook, break-ups were shit. Now they're the fucking pits.
(Luckily my break-ups happened before I jumped on the bandwagon, so this doesn't necessarily apply to me.)
Suddenly broken-hearted individuals are possibly faced with what their ex-lovers are doing or cosying up to. That's pretty kak. Not to mention when someone has a party. You know whose attending, who might be attending and who isn't – and you make your decision from there.
Great for ex avoidance, but still, it's all a bit pants.

Friend's statuses are suddenly 'single' with that lovely little broken heart next to it. And now 500 people know, all at once. And they speculate. It's nasty. It's a nasty, nasty machine.

2) Government parastatals use the stats to monitor you.

Besides the personal implications, I watched a YouTube clip, explaining how it all actually works.
A 21-year old at Harvard started Facebook, and it has around 10-million users. Who readily post about their lives.

Never before has, say, Big Brother, got access to so much freely-given information. Email addresses, where people go, who they hang around with, their religious beliefs, their home addresses. Someone is paying big money to use these statistics.
How else does it make a whoring profit? The $1 gifts? The pop-up ad on the side? If you believe that, you probably believe the characters on Friends are real.

The companies that invested in Facebook - and that's an over $8-million start-up investment - are all regulatory research and development companies.

These companies are directly linked to the CIA and US Defense Force. These, by the way, feed information to the US government amongst other scary companies. They use this information to track how conservative students are, how many have said they read Catcher In the Rye (a book that is tracked closely in libraries and book shops due to it being owned by high-profile assassins in the past).

And guess what? Even if you don't use the site like a heroin addict – which is unlikely - they take every single person's information and file it, for easy perusal.

Too late – don't bother deleting your profile, they already have your information.
It states in their Terms & Conditions that 'information is used by third parties.'
It's the easiest and most evil way to gain information on every aspect of your trivial little life.

Luckily, I'm not planning to perform a jihad on the US government anytime soon, and Catcher In the Rye was one of my school set-books, so they'd be wasting their time.

So, anyway....yeah, that's why I think it's evil.

Shit, sorry...

Why you sorry?

Because I asked whether the Big T's surname happens to start with C (does it?), as a direct result of setting Facebook up yesterday...

If he is who I think he is, then your story is even more ridiculous, the guy's a nutter!

You remind me of my thoughts on MXiT.

Peas on Toast said...

Martin - you did? Where?
And whether it did or didn't, why do you think he's a nutter? :)

Izz - WE'RE BEING TRACKED!

Too late! The aliens already have first dibs on us. If you think those memory loss episodes were caused by Tequila, think again. That was when they implanted the tracking probe. It's tinfoil helmet time, folks

Yeah, and also: Paul McCartney isn't actually Paul McCartney.
He died in a car crash, and all the clues to this are on the Sergeant Pepper Album cover.

Paul McCartney is actually William Smith. Who is probably an alien.

Please make me a hat Kyk.

Yeah it crazy. They may not be able to see ur pics and stuff (you can set your privacy to max), but your friends are still visible.

I originally closed off everything to try keep any crazies from looking at my stuff, and then thought 'fuck it', if they want to spend time perusing through my stuff, let 'em, so I turned all the privacy shit off. They'll just get grumpy 'cos I'm cooler than them and do cool shit. Sad for them! Haha!

Peas on Toast said...

Don - yeah and even if you set your privacy settings high, the big guys at the top can access everything.

I also get strange friends requests from people I've never met, and probably sift through my friends etc.
But then, I suppose I can do that to other people as well.

Yeah and you're totally cooler and crayzier than all of us dear - which makes us all velly velly jealous. :)

i don't buy this conspiracy bullshit. the information available on facebook is hardly of any use to the CIA. Can you imagine George Tenet at Langley going: "My god! His favourite movie is Blades of Glory! And he drunkenly wore a bra around his head last weekend! We must act now!"

It may be of economic value to marketers and such, but not "Big Brother".

Also, if you're stupid enough not to realise that anything you put on facebook is in the public domain, you probably deserve to be attacked by government ninjas for setting your political view to "Very Liberal".

Peas on Toast said...

duke - fine. My heart bleeds lumpy custard.
I never said that people are stupid enough not to believe it's in the public domain, I believe those were your words.

Maybe watch the YouTube clip.

Sorry - that came out more aggro than I intended. I didn't mean if "you" (Peas) are stupid enough not to realise it, but that you (people in general) should know that stuff that they post is fair game.

I've seen the clip - I just don't find it very persuasive. Just like the various claims that GWB ordered the 9/11 attacks and KFC is really made from mutant chickens, it's long on speculation and short on evidence.

Peas on Toast said...

Duke - sorry, me too. I'm snappy today - I blame PMS.

Fair enough, I do get you. But I am also very suspicious about this whole CIA vibe.

PS: KFC isn't made from mutant chickens???

you - PMS
me - lack of action due to Ms Duke being away.

General grumpinesss abounds.

Hey peas,

I so agree with you. More the fact that I don't like the fact that my exes can see what I am doing and who I am doing it with. Even worse is I can see all my fiance's exes wanting to add him to their friends. Hell no. What's up with that. Back off bitch is what I say. Facebook is evil. It's not worth the 2 senteces of catching up with people you haven't seen in 10 years.
If you haven't seen them that long there was probably a good reason.

Peas on Toast said...

Duke - at least we can miserable together :)

Michelle - Oh yes. I mean, I really don't give a stuff if the CIA has my information. I'm more like, "why's my ex friend's with my friend??"
God, it's all a little messy isn't it?

Don said...

Thing is, people, in general, are too nice to reject a request even if it's an 'acquaintance', whether it's ur ex's asking a friend or whatever.

Michelle, if ur ex wants to torture himself by watching your moves (just like ur doing to yourself) let him. It's a pointless exercise, you're only going to get frustrated by what you see.

It's simple: Don't look at his profile, you'll save yourself a lot of heartache and anger. Seriously.

Peas on Toast said...

Don - agreed. One has to put a personal protection in place. If the ex still hurts, don't go there. Remove them from your profile. It just leads to serious (unnecessary) heartache.

Anonymous said...

I 100% agree! It's pure evil. Problem is, nobody listens to me. ;)

Peas on Toast said...

I'm listening Capdog, I'm listening...:)

I think I have this MASSIVE internet footprint so no need to hide.
On checking exes - don't do it. I did this for a while - became obsessed with who the person was friends with and in the end, it was just more painful with my imagination making up stories. Although 1 was true. Still...leave it alone...

Peas on Toast said...

Jam - I don't ever check up on my ex's, for one. I see their pictures everywhere - as they may see mine - because we have mutual friends.
But it's something I try to stay away from.

Anonymous said...

all the info on facebook is readily available to the CIA etc etc. Facebook just puts it all in one place - but it's not like they couldn't find it out if they wanted to. Dontcha watch Prison Break heheheh

but thanks for the heads up

Peas on Toast said...

Anon - ha ha, true, true. But it would probably take more manpower and effort to find it.

Fuck, who knows. :)

Anonymous said...

Have you guys ever thought of actually LEAVING Facebook? Then you don't have the temptation to check up on people and, surprise surprise, your world will not actually end. I am living proof of that. I left it two weeks ago and guess what - I still have friends - real ones, not acquaintances to make my friends number look high because I am so popular. It's an addiction...and leaving it gives some proper perspective on it all. Die Evil Facebook!

Peas on Toast said...

Anon - funny, one of my mates said once he'd reached the 200 friend mark, he'd leave.

He's sitting on 206 and still there.

It is the question said...

HA HA HA!

Peas, you so watched and loved "Conspiracy Theory" with Mel Gibson didn't you?

IITQ

IITQ - laugh all you want, I know what this is all about :)
