third world ant

The time has come for my Third World Ant lament. It is with a heavy hand I type.

In just ten days, my dear friend, ally, and flatmate of almost two years shall be hitting the high road with her boyfriend. I wish her all the luck in the world, and whilst writing this, I'm going to try and not cry.

I met The Ant four years ago, at our first job, Hell Inc. It was love at first sight. Since then, we have:
Driven around Hillbrow together to take pictures, acted Scottish for a night and broke into a pub, gone crazy at the Durban July, been the life and soul of many a party, and of course, moved in together at end-2005 when Ex S and I broke up.

Living together included dancing around naked, singing karaoke at any time of the day, knowing each other's sexual repertoires by the noises we have heard from each other's rooms, wiping away my tears on my endless break-ups, quaffing wine with me, being polite to any new men who naps over, running across the road with me in our pyjamas to buy late night snacks, making pasta, letting me cuddle in her bed when I'm feeling shit, generally – being one of the best friend's I could ever ask for.

It truly is the end of an era. One never expects 'eras' to end, much like longterm relationships. I thought I'd live with Ant forever, and quite frankly, I would warm to the idea.
But three's a crowd, and the Gilb – her dude – might find the bed a bit squashy with me in there. She's promised me, if I continue to be a bachelorette for the rest of my life, that I can move with them to Chile when we're old and grey, where she will retire on a wine farm. I'll be the live-in friend.

Here's hoping she makes the trek from Secunda to the Big Smoke regularly – for me, and also for her own sanity.

I love you Ant. I'm a little choked up right now – I can't believe you're going, you're really going. I'm going to miss you so much. You'd better not become a stranger, and you'd better phone me every day. I expect a warm bed and a cold Klippies & Cola for me when I make the journey through to the Poenda.

You've been my shoulder to cry on, the person with whom I share so much, the person who makes me giggle hysterically, you've been a sister.

Good luck with your new job, your new hometown, your new life. And never forget, I'm your number one bridesmaid.

That's so sad...

I was told not to see something as the end of an era, rather to think of it as a new beginning...

But I'm going to miss hearing about Ant. I just hope the new roomie is as interesting!

Kab - ah yes she has some big shoes to fill indeed!

Leigh-Anne - Yip, I suppose I should also look at it as a new beginning, as it is. And the new roomie seems great, so hopefully they'll be good stories! :)

Yes, the shit thing is she'll be living in a completely new place now - so it's not like I'll get to see her every weekend, which will take some getting used to. Roadtrip! :)

Well Peas, are little Ant is all grown up and moving out of home..sweet. Sad but sweet.

Are you experiencing a bit of empty nest syndrome?

What's happened to 3rd room mate though??

Just think, you get to throw a farewell party....so what's the theme?

Peas on Toast said...

Revvie - I know, the empty nest syndrome is bad boet! The little Ant is all grown up now and is flying out of the nest in ten days. Distraughtness.

I want to have a little farewell do for her, as it's her birthday coming up too. Theme: How people dress in Secunda. What do you reckon?

Shame Peas. I hated when my best mate moved out of our spot, it felt like a breakup! Not cool.

I believe your new flat mates great though.

Peas on Toast said...

Billy - oh yay, do you know her?

Yip, I can't believe she's going. They grow up so quickly these days, and next thing, they're shacking up in the Poenda...:(

C - sorry I thought you were my C, my Poen. I presume you're Chloe? Thanks for letting me know about the article. :)

Mate of a mate but i dont know her myself. Does she still deal tik?

Just kidding.

Peas on Toast said...

Ha ha ha Billy you card.

If she does deal tik, she'd get on well with the folk living across the garden, I'm sure. :)

Leigh Anne said...

Why are people often so nasty when it comes to talking about tik?

Peas on Toast said...

Leigh-Anne - um, well, perhaps because it's got the same reputation as crack?

Tell us something good about tik doll.

Leigh Anne said...

Actually tik has a way worse reputation than crack... It has a 99% addiction rate - that's even worse than heroin.

Can't think of anything good about it, because there isn't.

As someone who was addicted to tik, come through it in more or less one piece, and lived to tell the tale, I really think that way too many people sit and judge and make disparaging comments from up upon their high horse.

I rarely, if ever, hear people badmouthing diabetics, so why do people badmouth tik addicts?

(Not that you have, but I'm just saying.)

Anyway, rant over.

I'm calm again, folks.

Peas on Toast said...

Babe, what a courageous recovery! I don't think anyone is bad-mouthing tik addicts here, but only tik itself.

And you've come through it, which is something you should be very proud of my dear.

Cam said...

Secunda, eish!

Leigh Anne said...

I am quite proud of myself. Will be celebrating one year clean and serene in October...

No one said anything nasty about tik addicts, you're right, but I'm still super sensitive about it...

Anywhoooooo, on a more positive note, I email our mystery man and asked for a pic!

Peas on Toast said...

Ches - you're not the first person who said that :)

Leigh-Anne - fair enough babe. And congrats to you, by the sounds of things I'm sure it's been a struggle, but you should be extremely proud of yourself.

Billy said...

Apologies if i offended, although im clueless how i did, if i did.

Peas new flatmate is officially, in a kidding way, a crack dealer from now on.

Leigh-Anne: Big up. Anyone who can beat any addiction is a winner in my book. A big winner. Seen a few mates lose battles so to hear of a winner is a welcome change. Well done!

Third World Ant said...

aaaaaahhh, duuuude! That's as touching a tribute as any flatmate or friend could ever have. I love you, my little pisella, and you will certainly be hearing from me very often in the future. Indeed, roadtrip!

And Rev, your party theme is smashing! I'm so using it - you're officially invited :)

Leigh Anne: "I rarely, if ever, hear people badmouthing diabetics, so why do people badmouth tik addicts?"

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at least partly inherited. Type 1 diabetes appears to be triggered by some infections.

How can you possibly badmouth a person suffering from diabetes? They did not willingly involve themseves in diabetes, they suffer from a genetic defect.

There is no way you could liken this to drug addiction, which at the end of the day is brought upon by the addict him/herself.

Honestly, thats like asking why (sober) people involved in car accidents are not badmouthed, but drunken drivers involved in accidents are. Simple difference. 1 party possibly drove badly / suffered from bad luck, and the other party directly caused the accident through their own negligence and consumption of alcohol.

get real. seriously.
