it’s funny you know.

Pardon me, I have 'flu - a face filled with fluid, aching joints and a fuzzy brain.

Yesterday I was in my car, my compilation CDs running over, when Lonestar’s Amazed came on.

I physically cannot listen to this song. It was mine and Ex S’ song, and even though those days are long gone, it was ours for six years.
He was the first guy who actually loved me, and I suppose your first love is someone you’re always going benchmark and hope the consequent others measure up, or that you don't make the same mistakes with the next one's. Although we’ve moved on and don't ncessarily look back - I cannot listen to it. He says the same.

It’s not like it’s We're All Going On A Summer Holiday, or the upbeat equivalent of, say, Rock Around the Clock. It’s a schmaltzy, tear jerking thing. But the reason remains: the song was then, and I am now.

I think it’s because there was a time – before we started unraveling and before I removed him from my life – that I believed he was The One, and I was destined to spend the rest of my life with this person.
This wasn’t so, and I am happier for it, but there was a time when we both believed this. This song defines the past. I prefer focusing on the now, and thus, I don’t listen to it.

Consequently, another song I shared with an ex was Bob Sinclar’s Love Generation.
It was a sort-of joke, a little like the relationship.

Love Generation doesn’t evoke the same emotions.I don’t listen to it when I’m sober because it’s downright irritating, but give me a few Jaegers and I’ll jump around to it no problem.

Who knows what’s next? Or if there will be a next ‘our’ song, or if there already is one?

Mine was 'Somebody' by Depeche Mode. That was my first 'relationship' song. The relationship only lasted about 11 months and the only reason I don't listen to that song now is because it reminds me of what an idiot I was to go out with such an insecure, psycho, cheating bitch...

sorry, I've got a form of mild parkinson's this morning after waaay too much tequila last night. I'm double-clicking everything...

Johnny - he he no problem. I'm sick so I can't do much right this morning either.

Yip I think the reason people can't listen to their 'our song's is pretty universal no matter what the circumstances of the break up were: one doesn't want to do that trip down memory lane...
Good luck with the hangover. :)

I physically cannot eat tapioca. Admittedly, my reasons are different to yours, but it was the mucous reference that set me off down that avenue of thought.
Hope you feel better soon.

Kyk - frogs eggs/tapioca/sago...

Q: How do you start a pudding race?
A: Sago.

Fida - :) Except you love it, and I can't bear it! ;)

Congrats on seven years, in this day and age, it's not bad innings at all. x

That is the fun thing about music. Certain songs invoke memories that are either good or bad. I still have a thing about "Little Drummer Boy" - but that is a good memory.

You have "Oh my fark I destroyed my system riding the Argus" Flu ;-)

Peas on Toast said...

Antoine - music must be the most emotion-triggering thing on this Earth.

But..."Little Drummer Boy?" ;)

Ever since i have left Mauritius and only see my fiance(who is still living there) for 3 weeks a year, i can hardly listen to any love or sad song... And some times make it a point to turn off the radio or change track... how depressing!!!

Anonymous said...

There's a tape of obscure tracks the love of my life sent me after he left. they're all goodbye songs. whenever or wherever they pop up now, they'll bring tears.

and I find that music ain't the most emotion-triggering thing on earth, scent is. If a man walks by me wearing the scent (or smelling) an ex, that's it. reduced to toast in 0.2 seconds. head turned, distracted,. thoughts uncontrollable. gone gone gone.

oh brother...now i am walking down a dangerous memory lane.

Peas on Toast said...

Gaby - only three weeks a year?? You poor thing! Why did you leave Mauritius?? Lots of hugs! xx

Hot Pink - I totally agree - and nearly added scent to this post as well. Scent is unbelieveable when it comes to memory-trigger. It's insane, innit?

I'm personally glad you got 'Love Generation' out of your system for my own selfish reasons :)

The song that most makes me want to hurl is 'Take My Breath Away', for much the same reasons as saying 'making l...'. Argh! Someone bring me a bucket, quick!

Peas on Toast said...

Ant - didja know that 'Take My Breath Away (1987), was the flagship song that eventually discintegrated the band that sang it, Berlin?

I watched the E! True Hollywood Story. :)

Pea's: I'm not being horrible, but in a small way I'm glad someone else is feeling as miserable as I do this morning.

But hope you get better soon.

Godsgimp - What can I say, misery loves company...hope you feel better too china. x

Don't Speak...No Doubt, reminds me of my Bagdad Cafe days, 19 years old and not a care in the world. man we could party for days on end and not have a hangover, pffft, now a big night takes me a week to recover.

GoDsGiMp said...

with this stupid ice pack strapped to my face!!!

its going to take a while

Peas on Toast said...

DaveRich - I got one of those two, for the good old days. 'Believe' by Cher. Matric holiday. Where I could go for a week without sleep or a hangover...

Thank for you hugs Peas.... Oh well my parents wanted a change of scene and my brother and I thought it would be a great opportunity for our futur. But my fiance couldn't come with us cause you know the whole immigration things here. So for the time being he comes to see me every year for 3 weeks... :-(

A song which always made me think of him was "She's just 16 years old" and our wedding song was "I just called to say I love you"...

I was just 16 when we met... 21 when we got married...

Now I'm 23 and nearly divorced and even just thinking about those two songs immediately reduces me to tears...

So johnnyquarterback, even insecure psycho cheating bitches have feelings too you know...

I am less about "our songs" for relationships. Might have something to do with my lacking record on relationship held.

However, I've got the "travelling" songs - and a small American band, Postal Service, reminds me immediately of nights spent with cheap horrible rose wine in a very smoky dark cafe in the south of France.

Peas on Toast said...

Gaby - wow, that's tragic!! s there no way you can go over there again, or could've stayed? The sunny Mauritian climate seems helluva nicer than here right now, that's for sure. :)
Good luck dollface, I feel for you.xx

Anon - I'm sorry to hear that babe. That fact that you guys have been going since you were 16 is remarkable. And whatever you do, don't listen to the songs!

Guys I'm off. I have streaming eyes and nose, a sore throat, a cough - am dying. I'm going to self-medicate and hit my bed.
Happy Fridays everyone!

Great blog Peas on Toast!!

Gaby, where're you from in Mauritius? My family is from Tamarin Bay. I go back at least once a year.

Anonymous said...

Peas- I could go back but opportunities of young people there aren't that great. But the great thing is that my Fiance and i are tring to get things together so that he can come and live here... I hope that you feel better soon. Kisses and Hugs

Tuberider- I live in Curepipe most of the time that i was in Mauritius. Most of my Family is there (some live in Tamrin too) but i haven't be there since i came to SA 2 and a half years ago. I am missing it but i am happy to be here to..

Bwahahahaaaah! That is an astoundingly bad joke. This is probably why we get on so well.
Q: What illness do retired pilots get?
A: 'Flu

Anonymous said...

Boys of Summer. both versions. Feel physically ill whenever it plays.

Dig Love Generation as it reminds me of one of my best mates and I can do my hippie dance to it!

You have to know a relationship is doomed when your song is 'I'm the only gay eskimo'

Revolving Credit said...

Kyk, that's snot funny!

Anonymous said...

kyk..i loved that joke:-)

summer of 69 brings a huge smile to my face....the song was playing when i had my first kiss:-) granted, that's a long time ago, but it still makes me smile.....funny how my first bf ended up being my longest relationship ever!

btw....peas, i hope you feel better soon!! being sick is absolutely horrid!

This songs with meaning discussion makes me think of an incident that occured at the office.

For some reason I queried whether anyone in the office spoke Spanish?

Rev:"Does anyone here speak any Spanish?"

Colleague::"I know a bit of Spanish"

Rev::"OK, you know a bit, but can you speak it?"

Colleague::"Sure"

Rev::"So say something!"

Colleague::"OK"

(pause)

Colleague::"Sharika, Shakira!!"

Anonymous said...

Rev - that comment actually made me splatter coffee on my keyboard.... through my nose!

Peas...I visit every day. Waiting for that flash of brilliance, the one phrase that says: "This the #1 blog in SA, dude" - clever, ironic, whatever.

It's not there, chick. You write badly, you're not clever; your stuff sounds like Sex and the City nonsense. And when you have nothing to say, you write stupid songs in foreign languages. What's your message, dude?

Just wondering. Phlippy, Revolving Credit, 1000 browms mnms's, Kyknoord; these people are funny. These people write well. You have spelling, syntax, diction and grammar errors in your shit, and that doesn't even begin on the content.

What's your message, bro? You're not as funny as 2 Oceans Vibe, and you don't say anything serious. I challenge you to get better. Seriously, let's see what a "journalist" can write. Not impressed. Been trying for a while, but not impressed.
